Citizens are mobilizing. In the United States and around the world, over 350 groups are now working on coal issues. Most of these are locally based organizations whose effectiveness is often overlooked. The mission of CoalSwarm is to assist this movement by building shared resources. Our CoalSwarm wiki, created in collaboration with the Center for Media and Democracy, provides a constantly expanding body of information that anyone can add to and utilize.
CoalSwarm is a project of the Earth Island Institute, which was founded by environmental pioneer David Brower as an incubator for innovative projects in ecology and social justice.

Why is this man smiling? Maybe he has a premonition that the massive coal-fired power plant he is protesting, Florida Power & Light's proposed Glades station, is about to be denied its permit on a 4-0 vote by the Florida Public Service Commission. Glades, which bit the dust in June, 2007, was one of 59 proposed plants cancelled or placed on hold in 2007, 24 proposed plants cancelled or placed on hold in 2008, and 25 proposed plants cancelled or placed on hold in 2009, thanks to the dedicated work of grassroots activists across the nation.
